Smartsheet Serves

Our people

Throughout the year, the Smartsheet Cares Committee organizes large-scale volunteer opportunities where employees are invited to make an impact in our local communities. In 2019, employees from every office location came together to repack nearly 300,000 meals for hungry families, support the clean-up and conservation of local rivers, and volunteer at nonprofit organizations that serve children, families, and people in vulnerable situations.

Our time

Our 1,500+ employees are encouraged to volunteer in their communities with paid time off for projects that align with their passions.

Smartsheet Gives

Our financial resources

Each year, we contribute donations to nonprofit organizations which focus on causes that are meaningful to our business, our customers, our employees, and our communities. In 2019, our employees chose to opt out of the traditional company holiday party, and instead donated $100,000 to employee-selected nonprofits which empower children, families, and people in vulnerable situations to get back on their feet in order to achieve their potential.

Smartsheet for nonprofits

Our technology

Thousands of nonprofit organizations rely on Smartsheet to improve visibility and accountability, help run mission-oriented organizations, and achieve more.

In 2019, we held our inaugural Hack-for-Good at the Smartsheet ENGAGE global customer conference, supporting leading nonprofits focused on child welfare and enablement. Our goal was to elevate our certified users to support nonprofits that make a positive impact on the communities they serve.

At the event, nonprofits were supported by Smartsheet employees and customers who are Smartsheet Certified. Together, they addressed a variety of challenges, including developing a dashboard to provide a national board with real-time updates on hundreds of projects, a scheduling solution to help plan and execute nearly 1,000 training courses across the nation, and a solution for scheduling annual professional development sessions for more than 70,000 teachers.

Our commitment to helping everyone achieve more

When we work as one, we can achieve anything. We are committed to identifying partnerships, programs, and advocacy opportunities to help create a world that empowers human achievement in the following areas:

Opportunities for all: Early childhood education

We believe that education is essential to help solve humanity’s toughest problems, and a child’s early years lay the foundation for all that is to come. By supporting early childhood education, we look to support the future generation of thinkers and innovators.

Mental health for all: Raising awareness of mental health in the workplace

Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. — 18.5% of the population — experience mental illness each year. By supporting mental health awareness, we have an opportunity to help all people achieve their potential and to be the best versions of themselves, in and out of the workplace.

Our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging

We strive to build an inclusive environment that encourages, supports, and celebrates the diverse voices of our team members, who also represent the diverse needs of our customers.

To meet our commitment, we:

  • Host awareness events and workshops on mental health and wellbeing.

  • Observe and support cultural diversity through various initiatives and community awareness groups.

  • Facilitate team effectiveness training (Insights Discovery) to increase understanding of diverse communication and work styles.

  • Require mandatory training to recognize bias during the interview process.

  • Introduced bias mitigation techniques for hiring and promotion processes.

  • Established a framework to continually assess gender pay.

  • Use diverse channels to recruit and hire staff, including PowerToFly and YearUp.

  • Championed a Values in Action playbook that describes the specific behavior and actions that we aspire to live out at Smartsheet.

  • Capture feedback on the extent to which employees feel that Smartsheet fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace.

  • Promote work/life integration through flexible working options.

Our commitment to environmental sustainability

Energy consumption, waste, and recycling reduction

At Smartsheet, we are committed to continually improving our energy consumption, waste, and recycling methods. We currently:

  • Encourage recycling of paper, glass, hard plastic, aluminum, tin cans, and cardboard in all offices and partner with vendors to address more difficult-to-dispose-of items, such as batteries.

  • Recycle all IT equipment through 3R Technology, a certified and trusted ITAD provider and electronics recycler.

  • Provide reusable dishware and cutlery in all office locations.

  • Work with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as our cloud services platform partner to further reduce our carbon footprint.

  • Provide a stipend to employees and encourage alternative modes of transportation. Our offices are located near public transportation hubs and provide end-of-trip amenities including bike storage, locker rooms, and showers.

Building on established efforts, we are looking to positively contribute to environmental sustainability by eliminating single-use plastic cups and utensils from all Smartsheet offices, implementing composting programs, and putting policies and best practices in place that minimize carbon-intensive travel.

Office spaces

We set out to lease buildings that are Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS), or Green Star certified.

  • The City Center Bellevue office is LEED Gold rated.

  • The Bellevue Place office has energy saving lighting in accordance with City of Bellevue Code.

  • The Boston office at 179 Lincoln Street is LEED Silver rated and is also Energy Star Certified LEED Core and Shell Silver certified by the United States Green Building Council. This office has also been awarded the Preservation Achievement Award for the Best Adaptive Use of Historic Industrial Space by the Boston Preservation Alliance.

  • The London office at 133 Houndsditch is in a building with an Energy Performance Certificate of C-C. The space has LED lighting, and power and cooling design parameters that adhere to green data center best practices.

Our newest space in Sydney at 333 George Street achieved a 5 Star Green Star — Design v3 rating, and is targeting a 5 Star Green Star - As Build v3 rating and a 5 Star NABERS Energy rating.

Sustainable sourcing

We’re continually looking at ways to include more sustainable practices in our everyday work and are committed to partnering with vendors who have strong environmental, social, and governance (ESG) programs. Examples of this include:

  • For our 2019 ENGAGE conference, attended by thousands, we partnered with vendors that have strong environmental sustainable practices, including WSCC/WA State Convention Center Green Initiative and Freeman Decorating

  • We selected Alaska Airlines as our preferred carrier for all domestic travel. Alaska was the first domestic airline to fly multiple scheduled flights using aviation biofuel, and is committed to using only aviation biofuels that meet stringent sustainability criteria.

  • We partner with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Equinix as our cloud services platform partners to further reduce our carbon footprint. AWS has a long-term commitment to use 100% renewable energy in its global infrastructure. In 2018, AWS achieved 50% renewable energy usage. Equinix is also committed to achieve 100% clean and renewable energy across their global operations. In 2018, Equinix made substantial progress against this goal, covering over 90% of their footprint worldwide with net-zero carbon emission renewable energy products.

  • Breakroom water, coffee, and snacks are provided by Canteen, which operates on a strong sustainability platform

  • Smartsheet has partnered with Amazon Business as our preferred supplier for office supplies. See Amazon's commitment to sustainability.
